What's the procedure?

Immediate dentures

An immediate denture is the first (temporary) denture which is placed directly after the removal of your teeth
You don’t have to go home without teeth. The immediate denture is placed directly after the removal by our dentist. The placement of the immediate denture prevents most of the swelling.

  1. Impressions; This is where the impressions of the jaws are made, from which the prosthodontist can make the immediate dentures.

  2. Placement; After the removal of the teeth and molars the dentist will place the immediate dentures. In the upcoming phase the jaw bone will change. The immediate dentures won’t change shape and can become a little bit loose in the mouth. This process can take up from two to six months. After those months the prosthodontist can alter the shape with a rebase. Despite the discomfort of the immediate dentures after placement, we advise you to keep it in for the first 24 hours. This prevents swelling and bleeding. If the bleeding after the procedure does not stop, please contact us immediately. If you experience discomfort or when the dentures don’t fit properly please contact us.
  3. Final dentures; After the jaw is completely healed (this can take up to 1 year) The prosthodontist will make the final dentures. In this period you are welcome for regular checkups to make this period as comfortable as possible.

Dentures

In order to place dentures, a number of appointments must be made.

  1. Intake; this is where the test impressions of the jaws are made, from which the prosthodontist can make special trays.
  2. Final impressions; with the trays made especially for you, we make the final jaw impressions to determine the edge length and fit of your new dentures.
  3. Bite determination; During this appointment we determine the bite height and position of the teeth. You also indicate your wishes and determine the color and shape of the teeth. It is useful to bring photos from the past so that we can create the most natural result possible.
  4. Trial prosthesis; With a test denture, the prosthodontist checks whether the teeth fit nicely in the mouth and whether the molars fit together properly. The fit will not be optimal yet because the teeth are still on a wax plate.
  5. Placing the dentures; the definitive prosthesis is ready and placed. Now the dentures are checked for aesthetics, places of pain and how it affects speech.
  6. Follow-up; the fit and function of the dentures is checked by the prosthodontist during the follow-up. If necessary, some corrections are made. After this, the treatment is completed and the prosthesis is checked annually during a regular check-up in our dental practice.

Partial Denture

Also with a partial denture, several appointments are necessary to be able to make a well-fitting picture.

  1. Intake; the intake interview takes place with the dental prosthetist. During this meeting, it is determined how the prosthesis can be attached and which prosthesis is most suitable.
  2. First prints; the first impressions are made of the jaws.
  3. Final Print; the perfect fit of the partial denture is determined with a custom-made tray.
  4. Bite determination; with a bite plate it is determined where the teeth and molars touch each other. The color of the teeth is now also selected.
  5. Fit; the wax plate containing the teeth and/or molars is fitted. This way we can determine whether the color and position of the teeth and molars are correct.
  6. Placing the prosthesis; the partial denture is placed and immediately checked that it fits properly and does not cause pain.
  7. Control; A few weeks after placement, there is a follow-up check-up with the prosthodontist. If necessary, corrections can still be made. The prosthesis is then checked during the regular check-ups in De Tandenpraktijk.

What is the difference between frame prosthesis and partial prosthesis?

There are different types of dentures or partial dentures. Which one is used depends on several things. For example, a synthetic prosthesis is often an emergency provision that is used as a precursor to the frame prosthesis or if a bridge or frame prosthesis is too expensive. The plastic denture is made entirely of plastic and can be provided with two or more curved hooks, anchors, which are placed around the existing teeth. The frame prosthesis is a metal frame made of chrome cobalt or titanium that offers a durable solution for the long term. It is used when a bridge is not possible and when the remaining teeth are strong enough to support this structure.

What is an immediate prosthesis?

An immediate denture is the temporary denture that is placed immediately after the removal of all your teeth in a jaw. The prosthesis is placed in the mouth immediately after the extraction of the teeth and/or molars. So you no longer have to wait long for dentures.

Sleeping, with or without dentures?

It is better not to take off your dentures while sleeping on the first night. This allows your jaws to get used to the dentures. After the first night, you can take the dentures off while sleeping so that your jaws can rest and recover. You can store the dentures during the night in the denture tray that you have been given.
